Where have I been?

Well…this blog has been a bit of a mystery lately, its not that I am not interested, rather than I have been busy. University is going well, been somewhat inundated with assignments, and I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!! :)

It also appears that I have had a bit of downtime, something to do with the servers – not sure what went on there either!

I am around on twitter if you want to contact me anytime soon :) http://www.twitter.com/tomdimmock

Well, hello there. has it really been nearly a year since I last blogged as TomDimmock? I have decided to bring back the blog, and make my entire site look generally more personal.

I will do some blogging soon, I promise.

I havn’t written a “real” post for absolutely ages (19th February to be exact!) A lot has happened since then*…including a few personal issues, alas you don’t need to know!

I have been ill recently, nut sure what is up. The doctors are testing me, stealing lots of blood etc and as of yet, have found nothing that could be causing how I feel

I plan on writing a few more posts today to keep you all updated…so be patient. Please!! :D

*These include going to see Jim Davidson LIVE, A few nights out with friends, a few days worth of photography (coming soon!), working on a new website for an organisation, working with St John Ambulance and completing 2 university essays. Phew…there was more but i ran out of room!

New Identity

As you can see, I have created a new identity for TomDimmock. Firstly, I have created a new logo, which can been seen below. What do you think?

Business Cards

The Front…

And The Back …

There may also be some slight changes to the layout, with extra use of Icons and pictures…and perhaps a bit more colour and better fonts to entrawl new visitors to my secret plan to own the internet website

Calling all designers!

Just a quick post today…

I am asking all designers to consider designing me a new logo. I would like the text “Tom Dimmock” to be included in the logo (either as one or 2 words) I would also like some form of beveled/3D image next to my text, giving some insight into who I am (Blogger, Mac Enthusiast, Web Designer, Photographer).

Remember I like a lot of blues and greys…however I will consider designing my website around the logo!

There may be a incentive to the winning design via PayPal if I decide to use it!

New Year…an update!

1. University Assignment
I received my university assignment back today on the Cardiovascular System. The report looked at how changes in position and moderate exercise can affect the human cardiovascular function. And it is good news…I PASSED!!  :D

2. The C-C-Chilly Weather
Brrrr…It has been cold recently. Many people have picked up on the fact that I am wearing a jumper (it is not normal for me!). Ooh…and today it snowed not once, but 3 times!! It made my day alongside my assignment.

3. Web Design
As you SHOULD have noticed, my website has a new design, that I did on a rainy a day over Christmas break. I am, however, still not happy with it, and will be making improvements till it is complete. Please contact me with any ideas!! I am willing to attempt to include a swish flash design etc

4. Google Applications
As I posted about here, I decided to use Google applications to host my E-Mails. There was a slight error with my MX Entry though, and cPanel decided that I couldn’t change it, so I have had to get my host to change it…therefore, my E-Mails may be playing up till Wednesday evening! :(

P.S. I hope to get some photos up in the next couple of days!

Before you ask…

I have already had a couple people ask me if I took the picture of the planes in my header…

The answer is – Yes, I did. I took it at the Shoreham Airshow 2008, on my break from the control centre (was a bit stuffy in there!)

Qumana and Google Apps

Firstly, although I mentioned in my last post that I was going to be using a program called Bleezer to post to my blog, I have now been recommended another application. It is called Qumana, and was developed by Qumana Software Inc.

Downloading Qumana was really easy with the file being only 8.7MB. The installation was easy, only having to enter the address of my blog, and my username and password and the software did the rest (unlike other software which asks for various settings such as the address of XMLRPC.php).

My first impressions of Qumana are really good, the design looks professional and has many features that other basic applications don’t contain. The program seems a lot more powerful than the other ones I have trailed, and I will probably be using this for some time.

Google Apps
Now that I am doing more with my domain name (TomDimmock.co.uk), I have noticed that my space is being eaten, mainly by EMails. I am only “renting” 250mb of the interweb, and so I need to use my space wisely.

I’ve been using Gmail for a few years now on my personal account; however use my @tomdimmock.co.uk address for professional purposes. I was looking for a way to increase my EMail space without paying too much, and then I stumbled upon Google Apps. I had heard about it before, but it has never really been the sort of software that I have looked into. So earlier this morning, I did a bit more research and created an account.

For those who don’t know much about Google Apps, it is a service run by Google where they will host various applications for you. For example, they will hold EMail (using their GMail service with your domain), calendars (Google Calendars), documents (Google Docs) and you can even use Google Chat!

For now, I will be using it to host my @tomdimmock.co.uk EMails.

It works by changing your MX records on your DNS server so that it is accessing a Google machine as your mail server. It can take 48 hours.*

I will eventually move all my EMails to the new host, therefore freeing up space on my server. Anyway, so far I’m happy with my choice to move to Google Apps. Feel free to contact me for more information

*My EMails may be playing up till Monday lunchtime, so sorry for any inconvenience. Feel free to EMail my personal account.

As you may have noticed…TomDimmock.co.uk has undergone a rapid development. I have created a website in PHP, using only my inspiration on the day to get me through.

I hope that I will begin using my site a bit more from now o. I am also trialling another desktop blogging application from which this post is being sent!). It is called Bleezer, and has been created by Larry Borsato. I will see how this goes, before I finally decide on a desktop blogging application that I will use.

Please feel free to email any ideas for the site to me on ideas[at]tomdimmock.co.uk.

Sit and ponder…

I’m having one of those ‘writers block’ moments this year. I want to write, but there is honestly nothing worth writing about. I am in Bournemouth still…tired from university (already!?) and wondering what the weather will throw at us next!

I have a long train journey today, and I have decided to sit and ponder a post…whether it will go up is a different kettle of fish!

Take care…
