In the spirit of getting ready for university, I am leaving both of my jobs. I finished at Tesco on Wednesday and finish here at the county council today.
I plan on going to France with Mr.B, got to work out times/dates. Ooh…Mr.B if you ar reading. Looking good with Brittany!!! £60 for 3 adult returns! That doesn’t sound too bad at all!
I am going to shoreham airshow over the weekend, so I am expecting long days and early mornings – being picke up at 6.15 tomorrow! Anywho
I have recently seen the video from British Heart Foundations 2 minute campaign. A 2 minute video that could help save a life, after showing the symptoms of a Heart Attack.
In the event that you suffer these symptoms or witness them, dial 999 for an ambulance. Sit the casualty leaning against an wall with their knees bent. Chewing on an asprin helps thin the blood reducing the undue pressure, so consider this option.
Further to my last post, I thought that I would explain the theory behind thunder and lightning, in real basic terms.
Last night, whilst watching the Thunder Storm, the Security Guard said about a customer who told him that thunder and lighting is caused by clouds colliding. At which point I burst out laughing!
Actually…I can’t be bothered to write something, so thank you to fate.is.killing.me from Yahoo Answers in Canada for writing such a brilliant answer. In fact I will post it here!
The sky is filled with electric charge. In a calm sky, the + and – charges are evenly interspersed thoughout the atmosphere. Therefore, a calm sky has a neutral charge.
Inside a thunderstorm, electric charge is spread out differently. A thunderstorm consists of ice crystals and hailstones. The ice crystals have a + charge, while the hailstones have a – charge. The ice crystals are pushed to the top of the thunderstorm cloud by an updraft. Meanwhile, the hailstones are pushed to the bottom of the thunderstorm by its downdraft. Thus, the thunderstorm’s + and – charges are separated into two levels: the + charge at the top and the – charge at the bottom.
During a thunderstorm, the Earth’s surface has a + charge. Because opposites attract, the – charge at the bottom of the thunder cloud wants to link up with the + charge of the Earth’s surface.
Once the – charge at the bottom of the cloud gets large enough to overcome air resistance, a flow of – charge rushes toward the earth. This is known as a stepped leader. The + charges of the Earth are attracted to this stepped leader, so a flow of + charge moves into the air. When the stepped leader and the + charge from the earth meet, a strong electric current carries + charge up into the cloud. This electric current is known as the return stroke of lightning and is visible to the human eye.
and lightning causes thunder….
You see a flash of lightning across the night sky. Five seconds later, your hear the rumble of thunder. If lightning and thunder come from the same source, then why don’t they occur at the same time?
Actually, they do occur at the same time. The time difference that you sense is due to the way sound and light travel. Light travels extremely fast (300,000,000 m/s). In fact, it is faster than anything else. Sound travels at a measly 343 m/s through air. Therefore we can see light in an instant, but it takes a while to hear thunder.
Sound has another disadvantage because it tends to bounce off molecules in the air. This makes the sound travel in all different directions. The further away the source of the sound is, the more the sound gets distorted.
Therefore, when you hear rumbling thunder, the lightning bolt was far away. When you hear a crack or boom of thunder, the lightning bolt is close to you (<100 m).
Last night, I was stuck on the late shift at the BIG Tesco in Chichester. And then the lightning started. At first, I thought that it was someone taking a picture with the flash (from the other side of the carpark) but I kept seeing them, and then it became apparent that it was lightning.
The immense lightshow caused havoc for Brighton and Hove, with the Fire and rescue service receiving 52 calls in 1.5 hours as the heavy rain began to flood the streets of East Sussex. 2 houses also had lightning strikes on their roofs.
The lightning struck very close to the Palace Pier, the racecourse and the Royal Sussex County Hospital (as shown in the picture)
Those in Newhaven had hailstones the size of marbles damaging property and ruining gardens.
In this post, I am going to write about some of the stuff I had planned to write about, but never got chance. So, here goes.
Mighty Boosh Festival
Right…a music festival, hosted and run by a comedy act. Is that even possible? Well, The Mighty Boosh might be the only group with the capability to pull this stunt off. Rachael, Vikki and I woke up nice and early to catch a morning train. Buying breakfast at the station, and eating on the train we set off towards Tonbridge.
Despite a few threats, the weather managed to hold up, giving immense heat from the sun. Yes, this may have resulted in everyone sunbathing beforehand! There was a few hardcore fan who went the whole war, resulting in a few Tony Harrison heads wandering around. Rachael caused quite a stir with her Silver Wellies, so much so that people even started singing about them!
Robots in Disguise had a good crowd throughout the elecro-punk music . Someone I was speaking to (via tinterweb) said that Gary Numan seemed to remind him of Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. Me not knowing this Trent guy, I wouldn’t know!
Har-Mar Superstar certainly intended to shock the crowd! He got right down to just his underwear at Rachael’s disgust. Luckily, Vikki and I went to watch Frankie Boyle at this time, so therefore missed the rather bad striptease.
Peaches also played a short DJ set, but the crowd really weren’t interested so close to the Boosh coming on stage. However one song did catch the attention of the crowd. I am not even going to put the title here, but contact me and I will let you know!
Now time for the Legends…The Boosh Band started with Future Sailor and Electo Boy. They had a fairly musical routine, with comedy acts as Old Gregg, The Funk, Bollo and Naboo came out. The moon made another appearance and sang his song, with a twist. Bob Fossil and Har Mar did a dance and rap off and other amazing acts.
In one word – AMAZING! Next time, I vow to take more money as everything is so pricey!
Pass Plus
On the same day as we got back from the Mighty Boosh Festival, I did my Pass Plus. For those of you who don’t know what Pass Plus is, it is a 6 hour course of lessons aimed at those who have passed their driving test. It covers motorways, town roads, country roads, adverse weather conditions, Night driving and Dual carriageways.
Well…it was certainly adverse weather conditons as on the first part, we had to slow right down to 30MPH on a motorway due to the speed of the rain. Finally the sun came out, and normal 70MPH resumed!
I extremely recommend it, maily because it knocked £300 off my insurance!
Work
Just to let you know why Blogging seems a bit side-tracked at the moment. During these holidays, I am working 7 days a week to raise enough money to spport me through University. I am continuing with my work at Tesco, but have a second job at West Sussex County Council. That is why posts seem a bit delayed.
I will write about the other stuff I have had planned soon. Honest!
…as the futures bright, the futures orange. In other words I am all-white.
OK. Enough of the colour puns…but those who talk to me on msn will know that I am feeling colourless, as in I have lost my colour.
I had an occupational health last week, where I was told I am colourblind. I didn’t really take much notice until I realised that it will affect my life. It is unlikely that I can train to be a Paramedic anymore.
I don’t feel like posting much, considering the last 6 havn’t appeared (So i have been posting – meh!)
On the 24th April, Messenger:mac 7 Was released by Microsoft. Unfortunately, due to Microsofts dissapointing version 6 which did not support webcams, I moved to using Mercury Messenger.
Mercury is more of an IRC IM, and is therefore slightly different. Anywho, I went to download Mesenger:mac 7 today, only to find Microsoft had not yet included it. It was very disapointing to see Microsoft can’t keep up with Technology. It has now, however, been included for the Corporate users, but considering I am a personal user I suppose I will go back to Mercury.
Microsoft…Please work alongside us Apple users, unless you want us to move onto apple software!
It was about 2 weeks ago when Steve Jobs, and the Apple Crew released the Apple iPhone 3G.
Luckily, I have had a chance to play on one of these already, and am almost 100% impressed. The new software itself is very good, with not only the ability to play higher quality games, but also more day-to-day functions like the new ability to search through the contacts, which the iPhone 1st generation did not include.
The main new feature of the new iPhone is the GPS. It seemed fairly accurate to use, however did reduce the battery life a fair bit quicker than I was expecting.
The phone is using faster technology, and Internet pages are noticeably quicker due to the 3G features. Apparently, the official Apple Inc. pages are the slowest to load!!! However due to it being software powered, the phone can be updated easily.
Like a Mac, the iPhone uses Apples Mail program to look after your Email accounts, meaning that you can work away on your Emails whilst out and about. However unlike a blackberry, the iPhone is able to work with GMail’s HTML features and not strip them out. And with the touch screen, scrolling your finger across the screen is much easier than a scroll bar like my HP IPAQ.
A few things I don’t like
The Camera needs to have a zoom and auto-focus. And 2MP is nothing with today’s technology
Apple are not using the metallic look like their iPods, but the back is made of moulded plastic, which does not have the same “executive” feel to it.
The Price…I am a student!
I could have written more, but don’t like to bore! All I can say is I WANT ONE. So if you are feeling kind, all cheques payable to Tom Dimmock.
Well…not too bad. There may have been 5 and a hlf months since my last post, but who cares! Well, some people obviously do as I have had loads of EMails from the *quiet ones* asking where I had gone.
Since my last post, I have become 18 (6th Feb!). Which means I can now buy alcohol, gamble, buy knives, go drinking. All sorts of things that I have never been able to do before!
I applied for universities to study the Paramedic Science Foundation Degree. As most people know, this has been mmy life long ambition, however I didn’t get a place to study in ’08 mainly due to lack of driving license! I have therefore applied to study as an Operating Department Practitioner. I have an unconditional offer from Bournemouth as long as I pass the CRB (Yes…I know that makes it a conditional offer, but it was sent to me as unconditional). My placements for this will be at Taunton (long way from uni!) so I am awaiting to see if I can get the Royal Dorchester!.
I will apply to do the Paramedic Course straight after this! so those hoping to study in ’10 or ’11…WATCH OUT!
I had my last exam last friday (Friday 13th!!!). It was in Design and Techology. Therefore I am hoping to get my full A-Levels in Design Technology, Computing and Media Studies (or media theories as it apears to be!). I am relieved that they are all over, so lets just see how things pan out in my life.
I am still working at Tesco! Yes…still a trolley boy, but I love it out there. Have got work there this evening, but looking out the window at the weather not sure if I want to be there! I am also waiting to hear back from St Richards Hospital regarding HCA work. Healthcare Assistants being the one who does all the menial tasks such as bed baths, feeding, stocking up, talking and basic (and I mean basic!) treatment. Not to mention drinking cups of tea!
Right…I am hoping to start doing something with my site. I am in the progress of a new design, and I therefore need to know from people what they want to see from me!
And I promise, I will blog as soon as I can, like I promised in the post called 2008
