Where have I been?

Well…this blog has been a bit of a mystery lately, its not that I am not interested, rather than I have been busy. University is going well, been somewhat inundated with assignments, and I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!! :)

It also appears that I have had a bit of downtime, something to do with the servers – not sure what went on there either!

I am around on twitter if you want to contact me anytime soon :) http://www.twitter.com/tomdimmock

Right…I know I was going to be posting about my camera, but I havn’t had time yet.

I have been having real problems when it comes to using the Internet in Bournemouth. The Internet that I am paying for simply doens’t work (would have phoned them up this week when I got back to uni – however didn’t make it and ended up in A&E after a crash on the A31)

I have, therefore, gone out and bought one of these USB Internet thingy-ma-bobs. I was looking round various companies which offered roughly 3GB for £15 per month. Then I noticed an offer from 3, saying if you took out a 24 month contract, you get 15GB for £15 a month.

So far it works like a dream. The software was really easy to install on the Mac, all you had to do was put the USB modem in and it installed automatically. I then, only have to plug the modem in, when I need it, and click connect in the 3Connect software. There are a couple of places I can’t use it – but not always a problem as it works if I move slightly, like nearer a window tends to work.

Havn’t had chance to test it at uni yet, due to the incident, but hope to be back next week!! That’s enough from me for some time…well, until the next post!!!

Qumana Update

As I mentioned once upon a time, I downloaded a desktop blogging application called Qumana. This enables me to update my blog whilst offline – and then publish it later.

Qumana updated the software to version 3.2.3 which has greater usability for WordPress (hence me downloading it…although I am yet to work out what!). It also has greater support for API’s, is compatible with Vista and now supports Linux.

Amazon Uk :: MP3 Store

Written: Thursday 15th January 2009

One of the largest online retailers worldwide, Amazon, has recently released their UK MP3 Store…and is already looking very promising!

There are millions of tracks available and with no DRM. The songs are are fairly competitive prices, (mainly between 59p and 69p each). This is cheaper than iTunes and allows greater usability due to the universal file type.

After a quick look around the interweb, it looks like this is, at this moment in time, the best place for people to find and purchase unprotected music (Legally!). Oh, and thanks to Amazon’s easy to use, and familiar checkout system, I am already set up and ready to go!

1. University Assignment
I received my university assignment back today on the Cardiovascular System. The report looked at how changes in position and moderate exercise can affect the human cardiovascular function. And it is good news…I PASSED!!  :D

2. The C-C-Chilly Weather
Brrrr…It has been cold recently. Many people have picked up on the fact that I am wearing a jumper (it is not normal for me!). Ooh…and today it snowed not once, but 3 times!! It made my day alongside my assignment.

3. Web Design
As you SHOULD have noticed, my website has a new design, that I did on a rainy a day over Christmas break. I am, however, still not happy with it, and will be making improvements till it is complete. Please contact me with any ideas!! I am willing to attempt to include a swish flash design etc

4. Google Applications
As I posted about here, I decided to use Google applications to host my E-Mails. There was a slight error with my MX Entry though, and cPanel decided that I couldn’t change it, so I have had to get my host to change it…therefore, my E-Mails may be playing up till Wednesday evening! :(

P.S. I hope to get some photos up in the next couple of days!

Well…I’m here at long last. A lot of things to sort out, but I have now moved to Bournemouth University* and have only today got round to sorting out my internet.

Had my first day at the university…it was like the first day of year seven, where we were all** early, standing nervously at the front door, waiting for our teachers to come an unlcok the front door. Well, needless to say that the quietness soon faded, and the lecturers realised what a bunch we actually were. This week, we have a lot of paper filling to do, with a few talks on the programme, the rules and expectations as well as sessions on security and the IT equipment (that reminds me – they gave me a flash drive with all the policies on as it is cheaper than printing them out! I need to go through them)

What can I say, apart from I am in my little room – I will talk about that another day – and just waiting to get stuck in!

You can, as always, keep up with me on FaceBook…and that is it for now. I am tired.

Take care…

*Well…I actually moved in last week!
** apart from a few who couldn’t park – thats why I caught the bus. Ah…public transport!

Is anyone going off to BU this year…more importantly, is anyone going to BU to study as an ODP? Let me know!

Memories and Days

Well…I am in my final year at Luffa. I remember this day in my first. And I am sure if I remind you of the day, you will also. September 11th 2001 or more recently known as 9/11.

Thats right, seven years ago today, the tragedy occured at what is now Ground Zero. So, where are the silences, the memorials. I havn’t even heard a news article covering the emotions. How can we just forget about this. Imagine what friends and relatives of those involved are feeling today. I am guessing they are distraught.

That is all I really have for today

In the 1400′s a law was set forth that a man was not allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have “the rule of thumb”

-

“Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled “Gentlemen Only…Ladies Forbidden”…and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

“The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

“Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the US Treasury.

“Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better.

“Coca-Cola was originally green.

“It is impossible to lick your elbow.

“The average number of people airborne over the US any given hour:
61,000.

“Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair.

“The first novel ever written on a typewriter: Tom Sawyer

“Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king in history:
Spades – King David
Hearts – Charlemagne
Clubs -Alexander, the Great
Diamonds – Julius Caesar

“111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

“If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air the person died as a result of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

“Q. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you would find the letter “A”?
A. One thousand

“Q. What do bullet-proof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers all have in common?
A. All invented by women.

“Q. What is the only food that doesn’t spoil?
A. Honey

“In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase……… “goodnight, sleep tight.”

“It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

“In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts… So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them “Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.” It’s where we get the phrase “mind your P’s and Q’s”

“Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. “Wet your whistle” is the phrase inspired by this practice.
