Qumana and Google Apps

Firstly, although I mentioned in my last post that I was going to be using a program called Bleezer to post to my blog, I have now been recommended another application. It is called Qumana, and was developed by Qumana Software Inc.

Downloading Qumana was really easy with the file being only 8.7MB. The installation was easy, only having to enter the address of my blog, and my username and password and the software did the rest (unlike other software which asks for various settings such as the address of XMLRPC.php).

My first impressions of Qumana are really good, the design looks professional and has many features that other basic applications don’t contain. The program seems a lot more powerful than the other ones I have trailed, and I will probably be using this for some time.

Google Apps
Now that I am doing more with my domain name (TomDimmock.co.uk), I have noticed that my space is being eaten, mainly by EMails. I am only “renting” 250mb of the interweb, and so I need to use my space wisely.

I’ve been using Gmail for a few years now on my personal account; however use my @tomdimmock.co.uk address for professional purposes. I was looking for a way to increase my EMail space without paying too much, and then I stumbled upon Google Apps. I had heard about it before, but it has never really been the sort of software that I have looked into. So earlier this morning, I did a bit more research and created an account.

For those who don’t know much about Google Apps, it is a service run by Google where they will host various applications for you. For example, they will hold EMail (using their GMail service with your domain), calendars (Google Calendars), documents (Google Docs) and you can even use Google Chat!

For now, I will be using it to host my @tomdimmock.co.uk EMails.

It works by changing your MX records on your DNS server so that it is accessing a Google machine as your mail server. It can take 48 hours.*

I will eventually move all my EMails to the new host, therefore freeing up space on my server. Anyway, so far I’m happy with my choice to move to Google Apps. Feel free to contact me for more information

Take Care…

*My EMails may be playing up till Monday lunchtime, so sorry for any inconvenience. Feel free to EMail my personal account.
